While rugby was the winner Saturday for the 3s & 4s at the more social end of the club rugby spectrum, there is a lot to be pleased about a few weeks into the season.

The 1/2s have had a tough start to their seasons with a swathe of injuries affecting availability last week, needing lower team players to play up.

Due to the depth of the social rugby squad we were not only able to loan enough players to the 1/2s, to ensure the senior squad was fully stocked, we were able to put out a 3s to travel to Canterbury and a 4s to host New Ash Green, plus a full complement of subs.

Given the prevailing winds in grassroots rugby across the nation this is very noteworthy and says a lot about the mood of positivity and optimism at the club.

Captain Sellsy and Vice-Captain Dannyo led the 3s on the long trek down to Cantebury and not only held their own but gave Canterbury (who are tipped to win the division) a run for their money, losing 36-22.

The newly launched 4s lost narrowly to New Ash Green who, due to lack of numbers, had to borrow extensively from neighbouring clubs… some of whom were quite quick and quite skillful! We also loaned them players to ensure a 15 vs 15 game.

With the 4’s captain and vice-captain stepping up to support the higher teams, the ever enthusiastic and vocal Mayhem captained the 4’s.

The 4s epitomises all that is good about lower level social rugby as it is only this beautiful game that can cater for such disparate types.

What other sport could see in the same team… the venerable Posty, closing in on his 60th birthday, yet still galloping around the pitch as a nuggety flanker… the lanky 2nd row marauder that is Oaf come out of retirement for yet another “one more season”… and the chunky Stefan, not only playing his first match ever, but playing the full 80 minutes and at tight head prop, arguably the most physically demanding position in rugby. Shout out to Stefan!

The scrum was awesome on Saturday and it was only us running out of a bit of puff in the 2nd half and missing a few tackles that enabled the New Ash Green “Barbarians” to nick a win.

A good natured game, a close contest, and a few beers in the club house after with your rugby chums, what more could a man want on a Saturday afternoon?

Our mission was for the promoted 3s and the newly launched 4s to hold their own in Kent rural B & C this season… and so far the signs are good!
